After leaving PC, screen dark, then it is dead until i do ctl-alt-del and "cancel" to get going again!

This is a bit weird to me, i wonder if anybody has seen it and knows why it happens or if something can be changed. My PC just started doing this somewhat recently, though i do not recall exactly when.If i leave the PC for a bit, open, screen goes dark (no screen saver). When i hit any key, screen lights up and is where i last left it, all seems well. The mouse pointer moves if i use my finger on the mouse pad. But, if i click anywhere the click is not accepted, no focus is placed where i click. And, no key is recognized, if i press a key. All keys are just ignored. Alt-Tab does not bring up
