Activating Windows 10 (previous upgrade from Windows 7) on new hardware

Several years ago, I purchased a copy of Windows 7 to run on my PC. When the upgrade to windows 10 became mandatory, I did that. I have recently upgraded the CPU and motherboard on my new computer, and now my copy of windows is not active. I have the original software key but it is not accepted - I understand that now digital licenses are used instead of software keys, but my old software key was never associated with a digital license or my Microsoft account.I spoke to technical support and they were not helpful, other than directing me here.
