Hello everyone..

I have a client that has Windows XP Professional computers w/SP3 and they

are not joined to a domain. They are on a peer to peer network joined to a

workgroup.

From time to time, one of the computers won't let one of the users logon

after the computer is freshly booted. It says the account has been locked

out and contact the administrator.

I CAN Login to the same computer as the administrator but not as that user.

Account lockout have been set in local security to 3 attempts then lock them

out and I realize that the user might be making mistakes as he attempts to

login,

My question is, how does an administrator login to that computer and unlock

the locked out user account?

I saw a document on technet.... Securing Windows XP Professional in a

Peer-to-Peer Networking Environment

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc875837.aspx

That says the following,,,

To unlock a locked user account

1.. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.. Double-click User Accounts.

3.. Click the Advanced tab and then click the Advanced button.

4.. Click the Users branch.

5.. Find the affected user account and double-click it.

6.. Clear the Account is locked out checkbox and then click OK.

But I can't find the advanced tab in User accounts,,,

Any help would be appreciated,,,

Enter lusrmgr.msc in the Start Menu Run box.

You can also get to the Local User and Groups management console by

entering "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) in the Start

Menu Run box and click your way around as explained in the Technet

article that you cite.

John

Just open the "Run" box on the Start Menu (or press WinKey+R) and enter :

lusrmgr.msc

....and press the [ok] button.

The Microsoft Management Console (MMC.EXE) file "Local Users and Groups" should open

in a few seconds.

Select the Users "folder" from the left-hand pane.

Double-click on the User that has the lock-out problem.

Uncheck the box marked "Account is Locked Out"

Press [ok] to save and exit the console.

I have to wonder and ask why that technet aritical left out such an

important issue as that!

I won't forget this one!

Does that also work on Windows VISTA and 7?

I can't help wondering if the name "local users ..." was coined _after_

the "lusr manager" was written to handle people who had locked

themselves out, or before!
