4TB hard disk showing 15TB

I bought a 4TB hard disk 2.5" external storage, but when I plug in crystal disk show that is pending sector and show caution. Therefore I format the whole hard disk to try to fix it, when I go in disk management, it show 3.7TB is allocate, but there is 12TB unallocated. I end up erase all partition and format it.Afterward I end up get 15TB of unallocated space, from there I was able to do any formatting and return to the original 3.7TB space, anyone has any idea what happened? and how can I fix it.
