2nd monitor not working with HDMI to DVI adapter.

Hi, I have a thin notebook (Samsung) running Windows 10 with only an HDMI port.
I also have a monitor with only VGA, DVI, and Displayport (Dell) (you would expect a monitor with DP would have HDMI, but no, no it doesn't)
I have an HDMI to DVI-D adapter. HDMI goes in to the pc, and using a DVI cable connects to the DVI port on the monitor.
There is absolutely nothing on the monitor, but the monitor detects something is plugged. I thought that the adapter or cable or something was broken, but the adapter + cable+ monitor works perfectly fine with my cable set top box. The picture coming from
the set top box is visible. And the port on the computer does work, because I can connect it to the TV.
The question is, why I cannot get any picture on my monitor, while I am sure every device in the chain works fine. I guess it is some sort of a software problem with windows.
