9-30-15 @ 12:37pm: Received call from 866-285-8026 saying was a Microsoft Technician following up on warning code that yesterday my computer had been accessed by more than 12 networks. I asked for his name and company. He said his division of Microsoft was called SixByGeek located in Addison Texas, his name was Mark Steel (I thought that was hilarious as he is the 'guy' who will 'steal' from 'me' the 'mark'). He said that a Microsoft technician would fix the issue with my computer (we all know what that means, and remote access is a criminals paradise). I asked for the main Microsoft number and he hung up. I called the above number back and (to my surprise) there was music and a different (still Indian voice) answered. I asked for Microsoft main number and he said he would transfer me to the main office for verification. Wow, they were good at adapting! I hung up and called Microsoft.
Unfortunately Microsoft Corporation is not helpful, the rep wouldn't take any info, said "it was probably just spam"...yes he said "spam" not 'a scam'. And then put me on hold for 6 minutes. I understand this is not MS doing this, but when your name is on everything, you could at least teach your reps to say "MS does not call customers unless you call us first, now go to the MS website and post a comment so others will not be scammed using our name".
Anyway, hope this helps....REMOTE ACCESS=THE KEYS TO EVERYTHING....FOREVER...so know who you are letting in!
Criminals:
1. Create emotional response: scare you -"12 networks accessed your computer" (you hear: I've been hacked)
2. Create their relevance to your need: they are helping you - "Microsoft tech will assist you with this issue" (you hear: I need them)
3. TAKE YOU FOR EVERYTHING THEY CAN, NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE!...its their one job.
