Last week's updates all failed to install, so I followed the
"troubleshooting" procedure of "disabling" Windows Update service, deleting
the appropriate files, and trying again. After 3 attempts with no success, I
gave up for the day.

At that point my "update history" showed ALL the patches I'd downloaded to
date, including those that failed most recently. Last night I decided to try
the "old manual" install method. I went over to Microsoft\Downloads,
retrieved the updates that failed, and tried a manual installation, one at
a time. Each succeeded.

Now for my "new" problem - Windows update "View Update History" now shows
ONLY those patches that were installed last night. Not a trace of anything
prior to them. When I "Check for Updates", all the files I just installed
still show up as needing to be installed.

Help ???

Thanks in advance,

Fred B.

Is this actually a problem or do you just want it to be a problem?

If I was to integrate the critical updates into a Windows XP CD and install
afresh - I would not need MOST of the updates you have likely installed over
the years. They would be installed already and there would be no sign of
them in add or remove programs (with or without the "Show Updates" checkbox
marked.) It is not an issue because Windows XP knows I do not need these
patches and thus - when i scan for them - they are not shown as needed and I
never download/install them again.

In other words - the history is only useful if you need to remove a certain
update. If you did not have trouble with an update prior to now (any that
are not listed) odds are you will not have problems with them in the future.
If you do end up having trouble - you will have to research to figure out
what update it might be causing the issue and it would more likely be caused
by some other change - as there would be no cause-and-effect if nothing
changed.

No, I don't want it to be a problem that I'm overblowing.

I would however like to know it there's a way to get the "available updates"
to "see" that I've already installed what it's telling I "need" to install.
